General Admissions Information

Kindergarten

Kindergarten at Nativity School provides an all-day academic program based on the belief that children who learn in an organized, nurturing environment will have success. Students will experience a structured classroom designed to support their foundational skills in reading, writing, math, science, social studies, and religion. This is achieved through hands-on lessons, active learning experiences, play, and discovery.

During the first week of school, Kindergarten students attend school in small groups for shortened days. This allows each child to adjust to their new school, while also providing teachers the opportunity to get to know each student.

The Kindergarten reading program is phonics-based, and supports students in building key decoding skills to support their independent reading progress. Students will learn letter and sound recognition, as well as common spelling patterns and sight words to guide their reading and writing development throughout the year. Teachers collaborate with families to instill a love for reading, at home and in the classroom.

Math in Kindergarten is a hands-on exploration of numbers, patterns, and simple addition and subtraction. We apply these hands-on activities in science and social studies as well. You can always find us having a fun experiment each month in Kindergarten!

Through religious education, students learn that we are all sons and daughters of God. They are reminded that we are here to learn, grow, and take care of each other, just as Jesus taught. Prayer is incorporated on a daily basis in the Kindergarten classroom, along with weekly religious lessons. Students will also attend weekly Mass, beginning in November.

Outside of the main classroom, students also get to attend classes in the following subject areas: Art, Physical Education, Music, Spanish, Library, and STEAM.

A partnership between home and school is a key ingredient for your student’s success in Kindergarten. Families are also encouraged to volunteer throughout the year.

Kindergarten is a crucial year in your child’s academic development. Nativity’s Kindergarten program is rooted in our core values. We look forward to welcoming your family to our community!
